Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today is the Feast of the Assumption. It’s an important day in the Church’s calendar. For many reasons. First, it highlights how Catholics have come to view and respect Mary. For me and for the purpose of this blog, I would like to address (raise) a certain question on the theology of Mary.

Our Protestant brethren sees our “fascination” with Mary through scandalous eyes. It is as if we’ve somehow elevated her to divine status. This, of course, is inaccurate. You’d not be able to tell in some cultures. For example in some Latin American countries, Mexico for example, the Virgin of Guadalupe is more than just a religious symbol. It’s national symbol and often invoke patriotism. Right or wrong, the role of the Blessed Mother is now taking on a secular angle. This is a far cry from idolatry – yet it does raise the issue of what is Mary in our lives?

My personal view is that Mary is our spiritual mother. Her courage and universal care is what makes Mary a special person (symbol) for Catholics. The adoration thing, it’s folklore.
